Similarly, the expansion of telehealth in multiple languages supports non-English speakers in accessing quality care, fostering trust and enhancing care experiences (Shin et al., 2023).

Unconscious Bias and Its Influence on Patient Relationships

Unconscious biases are internalized stereotypes that often manifest through microaggressions—small but harmful interactions that compromise patients’ dignity and well-being. For instance, assumptions about medication adherence based on a patient’s race or ethnicity can lead to less empathetic and effective care. These biases often develop through societal conditioning and media influence, shaping automatic behaviors that healthcare professionals may not consciously recognize (Meidert et al., 2023).

Microaggressions, such as misjudging a patient due to their accent or cultural background, contribute to patient alienation and emotional harm. Several effective strategies have been implemented to combat bias in healthcare. DEI integration within healthcare positively impacts patient outcomes and satisfaction by nurturing environments where respect, understanding, and inclusivity are prioritized. When healthcare workers are trained in cultural sensitivity, they can better align care plans with patients’ unique beliefs and preferences, thus enhancing trust and adherence (Rukadikar et al., 2022). This personalized approach helps ensure that all individuals, regardless of background, receive effective and compassionate care.

Furthermore, diverse and representative healthcare teams enhance communication and foster patient confidence. Incorporating DEI principles not only reduces health disparities but also improves institutional credibility and patient loyalty.
