Factors Influencing the Development of Psychopathology

The occurrence of psychopathology is based on multiple factors, each contributing significantly to the development of psychological conditions. No single factor solely contributes to the development of psychopathology. A nurse practitioner should thus have a more broad and holistic perspective cognizant of multiple associations and driving factors when dealing with psychological cases. These factors are discussed herein.

Biological Factors

Biological factors contributing to the development of psychopathology include inheritable characteristics, random de novo genetic alterations, and neurobiological changes. The biomedical stand view of psychopathology, which scientists and practitioners widely accept, is that psychological disorders are partly explainable by genetic and neurobiological changes ( Lebowitz & Appelbaum, 2019). Studies of the human genome reveal that multiple yet common combined genetic variations, inherited and de novo, account for psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, ADHD, autism, mood disorders, and many others (Smoller et al., 2019). This finding supports the preponderance of certain psychopathologies among families and why certain individuals can be at risk of developing psychopathologies despite the lack of familial associations. On the other hand, the neuroscientific basis of psychopathology is related to structural and functional brain alterations behind psychiatric illnesses. Changes in neurotransmitter and neural functioning occur in many psychological conditions, and these are often the targets of psychotropic medications (Lebowitz et al., 2019). Marshall (2020) further affirms the presence of structural brain changes in critical functional areas, including the emotional and executive functioning regulatory centers in many psychopathologies. Still, biological mechanisms are complex and have not yet been fully understood despite their contribution to psychopathology and, thus, a growing area of research. Psychological Factors

Psychopathologies can lead to disturbances in behavior, emotion, and cognition. Likewise, these psychological factors can contribute to the development of psychopathologies. Stress, adverse events, and traumatic exposures during early developmental stages significantly contribute to psychopathology in later life (Kalin, 2020). The period after birth to the age of 5 and even the prenatal time is a delicate period during which much of the development influencing emotion, behavior, and cognitive processes take place, and si highly susceptible to negative psychological and environmental influences (Kalin, 2020). Emotions influence cognitive processes, which dictate behaviors. Dysfunction in emotional processing is linked to the development of psychopathologies, as emotions dictate peopleâ€s belief systems and behavior (Gangemi et al., 2021). Adverse psychological exposure and maladaptive psychological processing can lead to psychopathological traits. Behavior, emotion, cognition, and development processes are interlinked, and their influence on psychopathologies can not be overlooked.

Social, Cultural, and Interpersonal Factors

Social-cultural and interpersonal factors have a role in the development of psychopathologies. Societal and cultural norms define acceptable behavioral patterns, define what constitutes abnormal behaviors, and influence the assessment and treatment of psychological disorders. Socio-cultural identities can create internal and external conflicts leading to mental disorders. This is more so among marginalized and minority groups stratified on measures such as gender, ethnicity, nationality, language, or social class (Moleiro, 2018). The discrimination and social injustices such as stigmatization, social neglect, severe legal and political environmental, and socioeconomic disadvantages experienced by these social groups increase the susceptibility to the development of psychopathological disorders. This is because these adverse exposures can be a source of distress, leading to psychological impairments (Moleiro, 2018). Additionally, interpersonal interactions can also be a source of psychological distress leading to the development of psychiatric disorders. This is especially clear where there is inherent prejudice or violent behavior by one of the interacting parties (Moleiro, 2018). Continued exposure to these interpersonal conflicts can eventually culminate in the development of psychopathology among the victims. The role of socio-cultural and interpersonal factors thus warrants clinicians to have a holistic approach while evaluating and managing clients with psychiatric disorders. Understanding that psychopathological phenomena are not just the result of biological alterations but also influences of culture and social constructs allows the provision of culturally sensitive, effective, and acceptable healthcare.
