The Topic 1 Resource, “The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education,” represents the core competencies of professional nursing education and provides a framework that nursing programs use to prepare professional nurses. The RN-BSN program at Grand Canyon University meets the requirements for clinical competencies as defined by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), using both direct and indirect care experiences for practicing nurses. In your practicum course, you will complete these hours with a preceptor and work to develop a change project.

Based on the readings in the Class and Topic 1 Resources, what are some characteristics of successful students and what strategies can you implement to be a successful student? Identify a role model or mentor who would be able to support your professional growth.

            I am particularly interested in learning more about Professionalism in Nursing. This domain encompasses the ethical and legal principles that guide the nursing profession and the importance of continuing education and professional development. Understanding and embodying professionalism is crucial for success as a nurse, as it ensures the delivery of highquality care and fosters trust and respect from patients, colleagues, and the community (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2021). Successful students in the nursing field are characterized by their dedication, critical thinking skills, effective communication, and time management. They are also proactive in seeking additional resources to supplement their learning and seek out opportunities for hands-on experience.

            I can implement strategies such as creating a study schedule, participating in study groups, actively engaging in class discussions, seeking out opportunities for clinical experiences, and continuously seeking knowledge through reading and research (Murphy, 2015). As a role model or mentor to support my professional growth, I look to a nurse leader or educator who has demonstrated excellence in their field and shares values and goals like mine. This individual should be able to provide guidance, support, and valuable insights into the nursing profession. They should also be willing to share their experiences, provide constructive feedback, and offer advice on career advancement opportunities. Having a mentor who can provide guidance and support will be invaluable in shaping my career trajectory in the nursing profession.
