Explain how research has evolved since the Florence Nightingale era

The nursing profession has undergone significant changes since the Nightingale era, which has greatly increased healthcare efficiency. Florence Nightingale is known to be the pioneer of the nursing profession, where she is accredited for being the pioneer of modern nursing training and theory. Nightingale made significant contributions to reducing the number of deaths by improving living standards and general hygiene during the Crimean war. Afterward, the National Institutes of Health was developed that helped to put nursing on the same level as other health sciences and helped to push for more funding. The main reason for developing the National Institutes of Health was to use evidence-based practices to improve population health (Houser, 2018). Evidence-based practice involves the collecting, processing as well as the implementation of results of research to improve healthcare practices to achieve improved patient outcomes (Cleary‐Holdforth et al., 2021). on the contrary, research is using knowledge to process and disseminate essential information to impact the prevailing nursing practices. The significant difference between the two is that analysis is based on developing new knowledge and validating existing ideas, while EBP involves the application of evidence to inform nursing practices. I believe that research forms the basis for evidence-based practices because it is through research that evidence-based practices emanate.

One example of an unethical breach of research conducted is during the study on syphilis by the Tuskegee Institute and the public health service to enhance treatment Among African Americans. The issue arose when the researchers did not offer the identified drug, penicillin, to the subjects leading to ethical issues such as maleficence and injustice. I would ensure care for the study by focusing on moral principles such as beneficence, justice, informed consent, and non-maleficence (Heale & Shorten, 2017).
