Leadership is an essential skill that requires a few qualities, for instance, intelligence, maturity, and personality, for one to be in a position to function effectively. Leaders are either born with the leadership skill or learn them from the environment they interact with. Research by Broome and Marshall (2021), states that most healthcare organizations have effective leaders who demonstrate excellence in the care provided. In my opinion, I do believe that most of the leaders should demonstrate and possess various leadership qualities depending on the situation that they are in. A patient’s cultural background should be well respected; some cultures are against some types of treatments and believe that they may cause some harm to their health lives, thus highly contraindicated. Besides that, transparency in healthcare allows for increased trust in the patient-physician relationship and the healthcare systems. Other essential core values that a leader should possess include critical thinking and effective communication skills. Critical thinking, an essential core value of a leader, enables them to make sound decisions based on a complex array of factors. This skill is known to increase the instances of a multidisciplinary approach since most of the decisions need to be formulated based on the presenting symptoms of the patient (Jin & Ji,2021). The current multidisciplinary treatment environment greatly fosters the importance of collaboration in the care provider setting. Effective communication is essential for the healthcare personnel and the patient. Majority of medication errors are usually minimized in a setting where both partners communicate effectively with each other.
Mission statement.
My mission statement as a leader is to promote the growth and development of those persons that I lead. I would love to ensure that I transform and instill various positive behavior, knowledge, and attitudes in them through team building and training. Besides that, I intend to achieve this goal by conducting a SWOT analysis to determine their abilities and know what to improve on. Opportunities for self-development will also be provided to them on an alternate basis. I intend to become their role model in adopting the needed professional behavior and core values to facilitate their growth and development continuously. Analysis of the Clifton Strengths Assessment
The Clifton Strengths Assessment, revealed some strengths that describe my leadership abilities. The top two strengths that were identified from the assessment included harmony, and adaptability. Leaders who ensure there is harmony in the workplace are well informed of its benefits. They take part in ensuring that all the care is provided harmoniously without causing any harm to the patient. The concept of adaptability, ensures that the patients’ cultural values and beliefs are integrated in a manner that it does not cause any harm to them. Healthcare professionals should at all times possess the awareness and skills needed to conduct verbal and non-verbal cues that may maximize the patient’s comfort and minimize misunderstandings. My other strength that was evident is the belief in the care provision; I do believe that care treatments are aimed at minimizing various suffering on the patients, it should thus be provided by well-trained and competent healthcare personnel’s care itself should be prompt, progressive and periodical, without delays since the patient’s state of health can worsen depending on its severity.
A description of two key behaviors that I wish to strengthen.
One essential behavior I would wish to strengthen is effective communication skills. I wish to strengthen my ability to communicate effectively in practice and when associating with my friends. I wish to learn effective communication styles, for instance, assertiveness and aggressiveness. Assertiveness in communication enables an individual to express various views of ideas in a manner that is clear and coherent while still respecting other people’s opinions. A study by Crews et al., (2019), states that the aggressive style of communication is where persons express their feelings and opinions in a manner that does not violate the rights of the inferior patients or individuals. The second behavior that I would want to strengthen is Interpersonal relationships. An interprofessional relationship is closely related to communication. It is an essential factor since it will help me to strengthen my relationship with other healthcare providers, thus creating a harmonious environment for honest relationships (Karam et al.,2018). To the patient, interpersonal relationship is also critical; this would prompt the patient to open up regarding his issues since he would feel safe disclosing them to the healthcare personnel. A development plans
The development I intend to pursue to strengthen the above behavior is enrolling in a professional course on effective communication skills and interpersonal relations. The courses named earlier would provide me with the essential knowledge and skills that are required for one to be an effective leader. I will attend various seminars and training workshops on effective leadership to strengthen my abilities in the areas stated. I, therefore, believe that exploring these alternatives would enable me to strengthen the above-stated behavior to perfect my profession and personal development.
